CHAPTER 21

Aaron and Caleb were working in their London workshop late one night.

Caleb put a lid on the wax container for the molds he’d been creating. “I should go home to Lizzie. Tomorrow is another day.”

“My classes start again in a month. I’m not sure I can finish the pieces in time,” Aaron told him.

Caleb leaned against the edge of Aaron’s worktable, legs crossed. “Prinny’s reception at the Pearlers’ is in two weeks, you don’t have a month. You need to take the lead on the grand service.”

“It’s a great honor and responsibility,” their father said as he stepped into the workshop. “He gave us an initial commission of a thousand pounds worth of plate.”

“But we already delivered the desert service,” Aaron interjected. “Over two hundred pieces.”

His father rubbed his beard. “Fave had stacks of designs. I estimate there’ll be over four thousand.”

“F-four thousand?” Aaron felt as if he’d been punched in the stomach. At this rate, he’d never get back to Liora.

“That’s why we started making molds. Certain patterns will be repeated, some of the medallions and other intricacies,” Caleb said.

“It’s such a big order,” Aaron mumbled.

“You weren’t here, Yingale”—sweet boy—“but you should have seen the fall banquet. A channel of water with koi flowed down the center of the table.” Extravagance was an understatement for the Prince Regent.

“I’m sure the guests were beside themselves.” Aaron rolled his eyes. This world, his world of exuberance and gilded plates seemed so different from the careless life he’d gotten to know as a student in Edinburgh. There, he was largely anonymous. Free.

“We’ll present a set of Greek-inspired pieces with a proposal for an expansion to a fish service at the dinner in a few days,” his father said.

“Arnold is going to bring over a crown of pearls for Triton on the tureens. Can you finish them?” Caleb buttoned his coat and put on his hat eager to go home to his wife.

“I will, yes.” Aaron polished the gold-plated scallop fused onto a pedestal of horses emerging from ocean waves.

Caleb left, and Pavel came closer to inspect Aaron’s workmanship. The tureen’s base consisted of three feet that Aaron had cast in the form of tortoises, shells and coral with tiny orange citrines and green jade to accentuate the stand. Pavel opened the hinged lid and looped his finger through the coiled eel serving as the top handle.

“You’re so talented. I’m very proud of you.”

Aaron sighed. His father’s praise meant the world to him, but his world wasn’t complete without Liora anymore.

“Why isn’t your heart in your work, Aaron? With your talent, you can immortalize your art in the royal service for centuries to come.”

Aaron considered whether he should tell his father about Liora. He’d been waiting for the right moment to share what was in his heart, but he missed her so much he hadn’t managed to relinquish any of the pain in his heart by saying her name. He suffered without her, but he didn’t want to seem ungrateful for his loving family and privileged job here in London.
